The following are 12 examples of ridiculous regulations that are almost too bizarre to believe….

#1 The state of Texas now requires every new computer repair technician to obtain a private investigator’s license. In order to receive a private investigator’s license, an individual must either have a degree in criminal justice or must complete a three year apprenticeship with a licensed private investigator. If you are a computer repair technician that violates this law, or if you are a regular citizen that has a computer repaired by someone not in compliance with the law, you can be fined up to $4,000 and you can be put in jail for a year.

#2 The city of Philadelphia now requires all bloggers to purchase a $300 business privilege license. The city even went after one poor woman who had earned only $11 from her blog over the past two years.

#3 The state of Louisiana says that monks must be fully licensed as funeral directors and actually convert their monasteries into licensed funeral homes before they will be allowed to sell their handmade wooden caskets.

#4 In the state of Massachusetts, all children in daycare centers are mandated by state law to brush their teeth after lunch. In fact, the state even provides the fluoride toothpaste for the children.

#5 If you attempt to give a tour of our nation’s capital without a license, you could be put in prison for 90 days.

#6 Federal agents recently raided an Amish farm at 5 A.M. in the morning because they were selling “unauthorized” raw milk.

#7 In Lake Elmo, Minnesota farmers can be fined $1,000 and put in jail for 90 days for selling pumpkins or Christmas trees that are grown outside city limits.

#8 A U.S. District Court judge slapped a 5oo dollar fine on Massachusetts fisherman Robert J. Eldridge for untangling a giant whale from his nets and setting it free. So what was his crime? Well, according to the court, Eldridge was supposed to call state authorities and wait for them do it.

#9 In the state of Texas, it doesn’t matter how much formal interior design education you have – only individuals with government licenses may refer to themselves as “interior designers” or use the term “interior design” to describe their work.

#10 Deeply hidden in the 2,409-page health reform bill passed by Congress was a new regulation that will require U.S. businesses to file millions more 1099s each year. In fact, it is estimated that the average small business will now have to file 200 additional 1099s every single year. Talk about a nightmare of red tape! But don’t try to avoid this rule – it is being reported that the IRS has hired approximately 2,000 new auditors to audit as many of these 1099s as possible.

#11 The city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin makes it incredibly difficult to go out of business. In order to close down a business, Milwaukee requires you to purchase an expensive license, you must submit a huge pile of paperwork to the city regarding the inventory you wish to sell off, and you must pay a fee based on the length of your “going out of business sale” plus a two dollar charge for every $1,000 worth of inventory that you are attempting to sell off.

#12 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is projecting that the food service industry will have to spend an additional 14 million hours every single year just to comply with new federal regulations that mandate that all vending machine operators and chain restaurants must label all products that they sell with a calorie count in a location visible to the consumer.

Q I’d like to ask you to speak on the broad implications of that recent Supreme Court case — not the specifics of the case. But the justices said that you overreached your authority. And your critics have been saying that, too. Given your support and respect for the Court, are you willing to rethink how you use your presidential authority?

THE PRESIDENT: I am willing to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court. And the Supreme Court said that in this particular case when it comes to dealing with illegal combatants, who were picked up off a battlefield and put in Guantanamo for the sake of our security, that we should work with the United States Congress to develop a way forward. They didn’t we couldn’t have done — made that decision, see. They were silent on whether or not Guantanamo — whether or not we should have used Guantanamo. In other words, they accepted the use of Guantanamo, the decision I made. What they did say was, in terms of going forward, what should the court system look like? How can we use a military commission or tribunal?

And we’ll work with the United States Congress. They have said, work with the Congress. I have been waiting for this decision in order to figure out how to go forward. I want to move forward. First of all, I stand by the decision I made in removing these people from the battlefield. See, here’s the problem: These are the types of combatants we have never faced before. They don’t wear uniforms and they don’t represent a nation state. They’re bound by an ideology. They swore allegiance to individuals, but not to a nation. The Geneva conventions were set up to deal with armies of nation states. You’ve got standard rules of war.

So this is new ground. This is different than any President has been through before, in terms of how to deal with these kind of people that you’re picking up off a battlefield and trying to protect the American people from.

So we have about 600 or so there, and 200 have been sent back home. We’d like to send more back to their countries of origin. Some need to be tried, and the fundamental question is, how do we try them? And so, in working with the Supreme — in listening to the Supreme Court, we’ll work with Congress to achieve that objective.

And so your question is slightly loaded, which is okay, I’m used to it. But the idea of making the decision about creating Guantanamo in the first place was upheld by the courts. Or let’s say, the courts were silent on it.

No matter where you are reading this article from, you most likely have a printer nearby. And there’s a very good chance that it is an inkjet printer. Since their introduction in the latter half of the 1980s, inkjet printers have grown in popularity and performance while dropping significantly in price. An inkjet printer is any printer that places extremely mammalian small droplets of ink onto paper to create an image. If you ever look at a piece of paper that has come out of an inkjet printer, you know that: The dots are extremely small (usually between 50 and 60 microns in diameter), so small that they are tinier than the diameter of a human hair (70 microns)! The dots are positioned very precisely, with resolutions of up to 1440×720 dots per inch (dpi). The dots can have different colors combined together to create photo-quality images.

There are several major printer technologies available. These technologies can be broken down into two main categories with several types in each:

Impact -
These printers have a mechanism that touches the paper in order to create an image. There are two main impact technologies: Dot matrix printers use a series of small pins to strike a ribbon coated with ink, causing the ink to transfer to the paper at the point of impact. Character printers are basically computerized carport typewriters. They have a ball or series of bars with actual characters (letters and numbers) embossed on the surface. The appropriate character is struck against the ink ribbon, transferring the character’s image to the paper. Character printers are fast and sharp for basic text, but very limited for other use.

Non-impact -
These printers do not touch the paper when creating an image. Inkjet printers are part of this group, which includes: Inkjet printers, which are described in this article, use a series of nozzles to spray drops of ink directly on the paper. Laser printers, covered in-depth in How Laser Printers Work, use dry ink (toner), static electricity, and heat to place and bond the ink onto the paper.

Your Kids Do It, and Your Business Should Too

Doubtless, you have heard the term, ‘blog’. Bloggers, as they are called, have been credited with bringing down key political and media figures like former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and CBS news anchor Dan Rather.

Your teenager might use a blog as a way to chronicle his or her daily activities. You might have even heard about high-profile celebrities who blog about their career and personal lives. Nevertheless, can these “personal online journals and diaries” really be used as a marketing tool for your ecommerce business?

You bet they can, if you know how to use them.

What is a blog?

From a technical standpoint, a blog is really just an easy-to-use web-based content management system (CMS). It is software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain content. The activity of updating a blog is known as ‘blogging,’ while someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Entries written to the blog, called posts, are arranged in reverse chronological order with the most recent additions featured at the top of the page.

But what makes a blog such a unique publishing format, different from a typical website, message board, or email application, is its balanced combination of technology and personality.

Technically speaking, a blog could be used for any kind of information update, whether it is a press release, product update, news or more personal commentary. Let’s face it – the application doesn’t care what kind of content is put into its form fields.

What differentiates a blog from other forms of content publishing is the style in which a blog post is written. Blogs beg to be written in an informal, punchy and – shall we say – ‘authentic’ voice, something Internet pioneer Doc Searls called an “email to everyone.” A well-written blog reflects the passions, bias, thoughts and judgments of the writer. It has heart as well as substance.

However, personality and style alone are not enough to fully convey the power of blogs. We have to go back to the technology side to complete the picture.

Blog technology provides an ability to do something no other content management medium does, at least not as well: stimulate conversation. Blog readers have the ability to comment on what you have written and have those comments appear on the site. They can ask questions, state opinions, tell stories or relate their particular point-of-view. You can respond, either on the blog through a comment of your own or via an email. Blogs enable dialogue between you and a customer or prospect, making the cultivation of a long-term relationship more plausible.

How can a blog benefit my business?

Let’s outline nine tangible benefits that blogs offer an ecommerce business:

Search Engine Marketing
Blogs give you an increased presence on major search engines. The technology is a magnet for search engines like Yahoo! and Google. A well written, routinely updated, keyword-oriented blog can enhance your chances of garnering high rankings on search engine return pages.

Why? Google, in particular, indexes sites based on content – text on your site. The words comprising the content on your site, whether it is on the home page or in the blog, are like currency to search engines. The more times a certain word or phrase, or a combination of words and phrases, is used on your website, the more likely Google, for example, will index your site highly based on that word or phrase. The reasoning is simple; Google ranks pages based on keywords by relevance.

Direct Communications
Blogs provide a way for business owners to speak directly, openly and honestly with your customer.

Brand Building
Blogs serve as another channel on which to promote your brand and your products.

Competitive Differentiation
Because blogs give you the opportunity to tell your story over and over again in a manner considered hip within the interactive community, they help set you apart from the competition.

Relational Marketing
Blogs allow you to build personal, long-lasting relationships with your customers that foster trust. One person put it this way: “A blog is a continual tour with a guide you get to know.” Blogs enable you to articulate your viewpoints, knowledge and expertise on matters pertaining to your industry.

Low Cost
Blogs are inexpensive to set up, operate and maintain. Ongoing marketing costs are minimal. They do require an investment of time in terms of blog posting, but it can pay big returns for the time spent.

For the small business owner looking for immediate and measurable ROI, blogs have yet to become sophisticated enough to measure in such a way that sales could generally but directly be tied to them. However, savvy blog entrepreneurs use them to manage specific campaigns.

Let’s say your small business is adding perfume to your lineup of cosmetics products. Starting a blog on women’s health and beauty, where your perfume is featured and discussed, could be tied to sales by adding “tokens – or “variables – to links from these blogs to your online store. When a transaction is completed, this token or variable can be written to a database and associated with that sale.

Voila. You can measure specific sales campaigns and a blog’s effectiveness in promoting them. Of course, it requires a bit of technical setup; however, it’s a common technical process. A programmer with even moderate skills should be able to complete something like this within a day.

PRWEB) – Duluth, MN (PRWEB) January 30, 2006 — A group of distinguished experts and scholars, including Robert M. Bowman, James H. Fetzer, Wayne Madsen, John McMurtry, Morgan Reynolds, and Andreas von Buelow, have concluded that senior government officials have covered up crucial facts about what really happened on 9/11.

They have joined with others in common cause as members of “Scholars for 9/11 Truth” (S9/11T), because they are convinced, based on their own research, that the administration has been deceiving the nation about critical events in New York and Washington, D.C.

These experts suggest these events may have been orchestrated by elements within the administration to manipulate Americans into supporting policies at home and abroad they would never have condoned absent “another Pearl Harbor.”

They believe that this White House is incapable of investigating itself and hope the possibility that Congress might hold an unaccountable administration accountable is not merely naive or wishful thinking.

Winter in Pakistan – Newsletter # 33

Likely you have seen Pakistan earthquake relief operations on television. Although ADRA Pakistan has trucked much of its relief effort into the Bagh area, ADRA has received considerable assistance with helicopter deliveries and personnel transport as well. Since helicopter operations began, there have been only a few days when weather prevented helicopters from delivering relief supplies to the quake-stricken areas.

According to News International, Pakistan , by the end of December our United States helicopters had delivered more than 14 million pounds of humanitarian assistance to the earthquake struck areas since helicopter operations began October 10. The US is currently operating twelve CH47 Chinook helicopters along with four S70 Australian helicopters. During the past 80 days, US helicopters have flown more than 2,900 sorties, carried 14,156 passengers, evacuated 3,715 injured, and delivered more than 14 million pounds of humanitarian aid. The commencement of sling loading operations in November has allowed the US military to increase the rate at which it delivers aid.

In addition, the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), under the auspices of the United Nations World Food Programme, has also had sixteen MI-8 helicopters flying relief operations and plans to add more. (Although WFP organizes and manages the service, it is a common service for the benefit of all eligible users.) The MI-8 is specifically designed as a transport helicopter. Its interior seats are removable, it has tie-downs on the floor for securing cargo, and it has an internal winch for pulling loads in through its rear clamshell doors. In the earthquake relief operations, a more important feature now is its cargo sling system capable of carrying up to three tons.

Helicopter sling loading provides a significant advantage for the relief efforts. Traditionally, loading cargo inside a helicopter takes approximately 10-15 minutes, requires a landing maneuver and another 10-15 minutes to unload at the delivery site. When loading internally, the amount of humanitarian aid delivered was typically limited to about 5,000 pounds. By using sling loads, the CH47 Chinook is able to deliver more than 10,000 pounds of relief supplies to an affected area, hover, drop the supplies, and quickly fly out.

UNHAS has also provided a large number of cargo nets for the relief operations. After the supplies are dropped on the ground, the various NGOs and the Pakistani military work together to collect the nets for reuse.

————————————

Several people have asked how many families are yet homeless. John McGhee has responded that there is still a great need. The number of NGOs still delivering shelter and quilts is diminishing, and those still assisting in that regard are spread over the entire quake-affected region. John writes, “I have frequently asked the UN agencies for an accurate picture of how many people are still without shelters. They say it is impossible to know for sure.

“But most of us on the ground are aware that plenty of reports have been verified of villages where the data indicates families have received shelters, but in fact, they have not. According to our project director in Bagh, “so many people are begging for shelters. We simply cannot provide enough…”

“So the fight for life goes on.”

————————————-

Please continue praying. God continues hearing and answering prayers. An example: John has to make a downpayment on every order, then he must pay in full upon delivery. No exceptions! All of which caused him a couple of sleepless nights last week when the delivery date was upon him and funds had not arrived. But God is never, ever late (though sometimes we humans may think He is, according to our own time schedules!).

Just in time the wire transfer arrived. Isn’t God good? Praise God, from Whom ALL blessings flow.

Mernie

by Christine Akiteng

No matter what, no matter when, no matter who, any man has a chance to sweep
any woman off her feet. He just needs the right broom.” That is what the
“Date Doctor” said in the movie “Hitch” starring Will Smith. The Date
Doctor goes ahead to say “women relate dancing to sex.”

Since the movie featured, I have been bombarded with emails asking me if it
is true that women relate dancing to sex. I know other people have other
opinions, but as for me and my household, we believe that many women judge
a man’s sex potential by his dance moves. With a few exceptions, music
touches women in a very profound and unique way – it stirs their
soulfulness. Dance on the other hand unlocks the playful and sensuous side
of her personality. And if men only knew what a powerful aphrodisiac
dancing is for women, they might not be getting the “I am not in the mood”
as often as they do.

Many of my girlfriends and women I have been privileged to work with tell me
they could tell what kind of a lover a man would be by the way he danced.
They could tell if a man is a player, shy, inhibited or uninhibited,
passionate or passive and yes they could even tell if he is a drunk by
observing the way he moves his body on the dance floor. And when it comes
to dating, these women say they want a man who is interested in more than
just eat, work and sleep. They want a man who knows how to communicate his
love potential and one who knows how to move that sexual energy through his
body. If you’ve seen Patrick Swayze in “Dirty Dancing” then you know what I
am talking about. It is much more than “dancing sexy”, it is like the man
reaches deep within and then releases that inner being in sensual movement.
It is purposeful yet playful. It is relaxed and effortless. Something about
his body says “strong and tender, fun and frivolous”. It’s …it’s…how
can I put it? It gives a woman that “jolt” below the navel. And when a
woman has tasted the pleasure of dancing in the arms of a good dancer, it
is next to impossible to settle for anything less, unless he has some
incredibly exciting career in which they can experience unlimited financial
freedom together or he is unbelievable in bed or both!

Unfortunately misperceptions depicting dance as being effeminate keeps a lot
of men from getting their groove on. Some need a two-drink minimum to get
the nerve to get on the floor. And when they do get on the dance floor,
their alcohol-aided sense of adventure is a series of exaggerated
theatrical gestures that are a torture to watch.

Guys, if you do not have the unlimited cash flow or do not exactly fall into
the category of “unbelievable” in bed then a dance class should be your
next stop. If you’ve already got the moves, show off that fancy footwork
and I don’t mean those Tarzan ape-like gestures. Put some grace into it. If
you have not been to the gym lately and have accumulated a little bit of
excess or have a really lean slight build, please don’t try belly-dancing.
Leave that to the co-ed high school dance floor. Unless of course your
intention is to attract another man, then by all means, more power to you.
But for the man who embraces more of his masculine side, the wrist-turned-
up-elbows-against-hips thingy – no, don’t do that.

Dances like tango, salsa and ball-room dancing are some of the most
passionate and graceful dances around but only good for you if you already
have a relationship or have made a strong connection. And remember she has
to say yes to “shall we dance” first. To make certain that she will say
yes, when you approach her, show her what you got. No, please not that.
Keep that for another day, another place and another time. I mean show her
your moves. The Ricky Martin-Usher-Omarion sensual dance moves around the
groin can get her imagination going in a romantic seductive way. If she’s
at your wavelength, she’ll most likely get the message and smile back.

And thus–not much changed–she, as innocent and earnest-hearted–he, as frank, as hopeful, and more proud of her–Florence and Walter, on their bridal morning, walk through the streets together.

Not even in that childish walk of long ago, were they so far jarred from all the world about them as to-day. The childish feet of long ago, did not tread such enchanted ground as theirs do now. The confidence and love of children may be given many times, and will spring up in many places; but the woman’s heart of Florence, with its undivided treasure, can be yielded only once, and under slight or change, can only droop and die.
